WHO AM I?

I scored my first and then my last career victory at

Darlington's Southern 500.

While most teams have always been located in the Charlotte area, my early success came with a team from the "Piedmont" area of NC.

I was considered one of the best road racers going in early 80's

In 1987 I replaced a legendary driver in a then legendary ride but my results were not what the "Boss" was looking for.

By early 90's it was whispered that I was fast becoming a has-been.

It was hard to find a ride but an old friend hired me to rekindle the past.

But that all changed when a top team needed a sponsor, and I had a sponsor who wanted me to get a better team....it was a deal made over breakfast but I have always been an early riser.

I went on to reclaim my title as a NASCAR star

In the 90's I was constantly seen in Baltimore apparently a

baseball player and I had something in common.

I never enjoyed my retirement...still answer the phones and

race when I want to. Now that's living! Who am I?

Pretty easy gang.....but let's see what you come up with...best answer goes to the obvious best answer...not the first as I have previously done. Good luck and have fun!

  1. Since it is Terry Labonte and Rowdy's World explained it I am not going to dig deeper on this one because I am just tired.  lol  LOng Day.

But when you choose please explain the Baseball player connection.

  2. terry labonte. used to drive the "piedmont airlines" car until 1997. then he took over the 11 driving for junior johnson. first win: september 1, 1980 at darlington (the southern 500). last win: august 31, 2003 at darlington (the southern 500). finished up his career racing in the kellogg's car for hms. now he races only occasionally, like recently filling in for kyle petty while he was broadcasting for tnt.

  3. Terry Labonte

Billy Hagan was located in Piedmont

his last victory was the last southern 500 on labor day weekend

he won the winston cup in 1984 and then twelve years later won it again with Hendrick

  4. Texas Terry Labonte. That one was too easy! On the topic, I was in the pits at the Hooters 500 the year he won the championship. My friend was an intern at the track and he got me a pass. There was one pit between Bobby Labonte's and Terry's and the driver was out of the race so the pit was clear. I stood on the pit edge and watched the whole thing unfold- Bobby won the race and Terry won the championship. This is one of my favorite Winston Cup memories...

  5. Terry Labonte

    1. Terry Labonte has a chance to make history at Darlington Raceway, and put some life into his season.

Labonte’s first win came at NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway in 1980, and the latest of his 22 career victories came in September in the Southern 500 on the same 1.366-mile oval.

    2. He won his last race at the final Southern 500 held on Labor Day in 2003

    3. He is tied for 16th on the all time road course win list

    4. He won his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship in 1984 in the #44 Piedmont Airlines Chevrolet. During that 1984 season he collected two wins at Bristol Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway.

    5. The rest of "silly season" looked like this among full time teams: Terry Labonte left the #44 Piedmont Oldsmobile owned by Billy Hagan to replace Waltrip in the #11

    6.  Labonte was considered washed up after going winless from 1990-1993.

Terry Labonte has slid down the points standings ever since his career year of 1996:

Year  Wins  Top-5s  Top-10s  DNFs  Poles  Points

    1996  2  21  24  3  4  1st

    1997  1  8  20  3  0  6th

    1998  1  5  15  4  0  9th

    1999  1  1  7  6  0  12th

    *2000  0  2  5  2  1  18th

    7. Terry Labonte was a teammate to his brother Bobby at Joe Gibbs Racing for five races in 2005. Now they will be teammates again, beginning June 8 at Pocono Raceway, when Terry will drive the No. 45 Petty Enterprises car while Kyle Petty moves to the TNT broadcast booth.

  6. I wanna say Kenny Wallace.

  7. Cole Trickle?
