There probably are many reasons.Most people think they don't get paid enough or someone makes more money for the same job.They have lost pride in a job done well and right the first time and they think they are worth more than they are.

There are alot of hard working people that give a full days work and then some. Unfortunately those with poor work ethics make it hard on everyone. There is such a shortage of help that businesses are forced to hire whoever they can get. I read an article that surveyed business owners and managers and they reported that almost 70% of their employees are unqualified for the jobs that they do. This is pretty scary, especially when many jobs affect people's lives and safety. With so many incompetent and irresponsible people in the workforce now, is it surprising that the US is rated so low in productivity and quality?

It's either because they're lazy, hate the job or just dont take it seriously.

There is really no point in half working, you mind as well not do anything

I think most people half do their jobs because of lack of training.  Many people really do not know what to do or what is expected of them.  When leaders, bosses and overseers hire new staff, most of the time, they just throw them in the fire without giving then the equipment to perform duties.  When new staff realize that most of their co-workers were done the same way and have developed negative feelings about the job, those feeling spread.  It's contagious.  It becomes a cycle until a strong leader comes along and break it.  

Yes there are some people who just refuse to put forth the effort needed to successfully do the job, whereas others want to but don't really know how or what is expected of them.
