Do you let your child swallow gum?

We have just let me son start chewing gum on occasion. He had a piece of Eclipse gum (yea, minty but he likes it!) and after a while said he was done and could he swallow it. I was just about to say yes (because I always swallow my gum) when DH said no but didn't have any other reason except "you aren't supposed to". I didn't think it was a big deal...

So do you let your kids swallow their gum... why or why not?

  1. no!!! of course not! it will stay in your stomach for the reast of your life! i accidentlly swallowed it and its still in my stomach

  2. Although it doesnt do any harm to swollow gum, i still dont let my kids swollow it just for the reason that its a huge choking hazard. Maybe im just paranoid, but i do know that gum is extremely hard to get out of the throat, when choking.

  3. I think you have the right instint. It comes out but its not a good idea often. If they a little and it might clog there instestions then no. But if they are 3 or bigger and its a small piece ever so often not a big deal

  4. No I don't allow them to swallow gum. I f they swallow their gum they don t get another piece so they don t swallow their gum.

  5. Gum is a choking hazard even with small pieces if swallowed the wrong way. Gum also impairs digestion to some degree because it is indigestible. This is not good for a child as impaired digestion can cause other problems, even if it is temporary.

  6. I wouldn't do that. Because they might choke on it by accident since it isn't meant to be swollen.

  7. it isn't a big deal. it won't hurt them. and on the huge plus side it is in their stomach not their hair, your hair, your furniture, your carpet, so on and so forth.

  8. no -but it happens.

  9. My son swallows the tiny pieces of gum i give him. Its not a big deal. The only reason it would be bad is if they were a young child and a big piece of gum, they could choke.

  10. I tell them to spit it out, but am not sure why, I'm not sure if it really makes any difference. Better in their tummy or in the trash than in their hair or on the floor. lol

  11. Of course I would prefer my daughter not to swallow her gum, but she does, and we haven't had any problems!
