Question:

Do you let your dog sit on the couch?

We are so undecided about this but need to make a decision fast before our puppy claims the couch as her own.

She is a Rough Collie and will shed heavily 2X a year.

I just don't know if we should not allow her on the couch. I know that when I have gone to friends homes who let their dogs on the couch I leave full of hair. I would hate to do that to my guests.

Any Suggestions of what to do? Do you let your dogs on the couch? How do you control the dog hair if you do?

  1. i do but both my dogs have they own blankets which i put on the sofa i have taught my yorkie toby " Toby do you want to sit on the sofa?"  he will only sit on it when he heres that commend

ive started to teach my jack russel it too, but hes stubborn! typical jack russel lol :D

  2. If they shed alot of hair i would try to brush their coats very regularly that way you can let them on the coach and they wont shed as much hair .

Also you could put a throw or cover over you coach then all the hair will be on that , then when guests come round take off the throw and don't let the dogs on the sofa!

Hope i helped =D caitlin xx

  3. not only do i let him on the couch he sleeps on my bed if you dont want your guest to get hair on them i suggest visiting their homes instead

  4. I have a toy rat terrier who does not shed alot. He does shed a little, but if I see a little hair, I just roll it with a lint brush. I would say if your Collie sheds heavily, to not let it on the couch at all. I personally think its disgusting when I go to someones house and sit down into alot of hair. If you want her to be on the couch, maybe put a sheet down, and try to avoid her getting on without the sheet. It just may be difficult for you to train her when and when not to jump up.

  5. We let our dogs on the couch in the living room and vacuum once a day or every second day. They aren't allowed on the couch in the sitting room though which is where we entertain company.

  6. dont do that then they become lap dogs that happend to me with my dog and he doesnt like to lay on the ground so truest me just dont and when they get older they take up more room on the couch

  7. I have 2 dogs and one is a couch potato and the other shows no interest in climbing up on it at all.  I do wish I had trained the first dog not to go up on the love seat or the bed.  I control the hair problem with a lovely throw over the arm and back of the couch where she loves to watch the neighborhood out the front window.  It is made of a synthetic fiber which is easy to take outside and shake off.  It also protects the upholstery.  But, I have to admit, if I had it to do over, I would have trained her not to be a couch potato mainly because she has come to believe that couch is "hers".

  8. I let both of my dogs get on the couch.  One is a border collie and one is a boston terrier, and both shed, but with different kinds of hair.  Where they usually sit, I keep a blanket, just for them and that keeps the hair pretty much off the couch, so that when people come over, I can just pick it up.  They aren't allowed on many of my friends' furniture when they go visit though, so they pretty much know where they can lay and where they can't.

  9. My dogs dont shed so we let them on the couch.

  10. yes, but I have dachshunds who don't shed much. I keep a throw blanket on the sofa and take that off before guests sit down.

  11. My dogs have very comfortable dog beds in the living room.  They are usually not allowed on the couches, unless they are invited up (usually by me).  They do not just get on the furniture as they please.

I do believe that there are many things that we as owners allow our own dogs to do, but guests do not appreciate.  Just like you said, when you go to a friends' home and leave covered in hair.  Sure, we're all dog people... but dogs must learn manners too.  Things like getting on the couch, begging for food, jumping at people who walk through the door.... all things that my dogs are taught NOT to do (even though I allow them to "break the rules" occasionally when no one's around)  ;)

  12. I have a leather couch, so my Pomeranian is free to nap, sit, etc. on the couch. But I also have the Furminator which really helps with all his shedding.

  13. In the beginning, I did let my puppy stay on the couch, he seemed to really enjoy it, but after a while it gave me problems. First of all, there was hair everywhere, it was a hassle to have to clean it all up, then after, he started relieving himself all over the couch, so i ended up making him stay off the couch..I used one of those pet hair things (kinda like a lint brush) to clean up my couch.Whenever your dog isn't on the couch give her some treats and praise her, or buy a little bed or something for her to rest on instead of the couch.

  14. We have a cockapoo which doesnt shed at all so yes we do. He also sleeps with us. But it depends on what kind of couch you have if it is a cloth couch that everything sticks to i would say no but if it is an easy cloth to clean stuff up from or leather go for it.

  15. I don't allow my dog on the couch because of hair.  She has a bed and knows if the family is sitting on the couch she lays in her bed.

  16. I would suggest setting some boundaries, just let your dog on the couch when you invite her to come up. Thats what we did with our dogs, and when they were puppies we would come home and find them all over the couch, but know that they are grown they only jump on the couch when we ask them to. Just get one of those hair brushes, you know the sticky ones.

    Good luck deciding.

  17. We throw an old blanket on our chairs and couch that the dogs sit on. That way it collects pretty much all the hair, and if someones coming over we just take the blankets off and don't let the dogs go there.

We have a collie too, and he also sheds like a savage. Lucky for us he's never been one to sit on the furniture too much. But if your dog is like our beagle, and decides she is gonna claim the couch, an old blanket would be a good idea, either always, or while your breaking her habit.

  18. I only let my little one on the couch.

The big ones sleep in a bed on the floor.

I control it with the tape roller things and the vacuum cleaner.

I also put a large blanket over the couch in the day time when I am not home.

  19. I have Short Hair Chihuahuas, they don't shed much, and I don't have a problem with them being on the couch!I also have throw blankets on my couches, when I don't have people over.

If I want my dogs to get off the couch, all I have to do is just say OFF, and they will get down and go lay in their beds. They are really good listeners! I vacumn everyday, and don't have much of a problem with excessive dog hair.

  20. Cover your couch with something before your dog sits on the couch,  otherwise hair will be everywhere.I do that for my puppy whenever he wants to sit beside me on the couch.

  21. I let my 80lb Rottweiler, and my 12lb Chihuahua/Beagle mix on our couch, bed, and anything else they please. The hair we just sweep off when it gets too bad, I really don't mind the hair and if guests don't like it- I'll put down a towel for them.

  22. I know people will think that I'm a meanie but my dog is not allowed on any of the furniture in the house. No chairs, sofa, beds, etc.  He has his own beds to lay in and tons of carpet throughout the house.  Even when he was small he never attempted to get up on the furniture so we never encouraged it.  He is quite content to lay by my chair or on his numerous beds to sleep.  He usually sleeps on the tile or hardwood floor in the summer as I guess it's cooler for him.  It's much easier to vacuum the carpet then the furniture.

  23. No!

She is only allowed on one floor too.

She stays on the floor and she's not allowed in the rooms either.

If it's only tiny and will stay tiny, it's a tad different.

But mine is a pit bull mix so she's a bit too big for that!

Just buy her a dog bed and put it in the family room.

Otherwise you may want to carry around a personal lint roller at all times.

    (:

  24. No.

    I don't have a dog though.

  25. No, and just because of what you mentioned about sitting on a friend's couch and having dog hair all over.  I want my guests comfortable, and I would hate having to constantly vac the couch after the dog.  Just don't let her start doing the couch thing, and you will be fine.

I have a Huskie that never stops shedding.

  26. yeah i let my dog on the couch

he is a 6 year old shetland sheep dog and he is very fluffy and furry

i vaccum my couches about once a month it takss about 20-25 minutes to vaccum both my love seat couch and my 3 seater.

    not that bad

  27. I keep blankets or a slipcover on the couch, so my dog is allowed up. When company comes over, I take the blankets/slipcover off, the dog comes off, and voila! the couch isn't hairy. When company leaves, they go right back on and the dog goes right back up. If the couch does get some hair, I use a vacuum and then a sticky lint roller for the remainder.

p.s.-there is nothing better than a warm dog curled up next to you while you watch t.v.

  28. I comb my dog, we try and do it every day. (Pom) and he as well has claimed the couch as his own.

  29. Yup my dog gets as much authority as anyone else in the house? Well sorta..... Just vaccume before visits come.. and on those days keep her down...although it might confuse her to let her get on the couch on some days then others she can't.

  30. we do let our dogs on the couch...all 3 of them.

we have 2 labs and a basset hound.

one of the labs and the basset hound are dark colored and so it our furniture.

but the other lab is a bright blond.

it gets on the floor and that's it so i vacuum everyday.

other than that we have no problems

we brush the couch off a bit after they are on it too

    but that's about all

  31. i wouldnt

it will make ur couch either dirty from the pee or hair and i might scratch the leather up (if its leather)

be very strict with your pets
