  1. The IEP helps because it tells people of their individual goals and needs and if they need special education help

  2. IEP's and Special Education are better now than in the old days, when people just had a general diagnosis & it was often just "retarded", which was wrong.

Although mistakes are still made in educating people, they are fewer than in previous generations.

  3. If you compare the educational opportunities of special needs students back in the 50's and 60's to the educational opportunities of today for special needs children you will see a significantly positive difference in the services rendered. The IEP helps hold the district accountable for meeting those special needs.

  4. Yes, IEPs and Special Education are great!

I am a pre-service teacher and have seen first hand the benefits that IEPs have for the students. They are good for allowing the child to work within their own Zone of Proximal Development. They are challenged to their ability and allowed to grow and develop as such.

My younger brother is in Special Education at high school and on an IEP and is thriving, where as when in main stream working below the level of other students he was often discouraged and gave up.

  5. Yes!  It makes the school responsible to meet the educational goals or say why it didn't happen.
