  1. Excellent choice!!!  Successfully united the Conservatives behind McCain!  As long has she can hold up under all the pressure, I don't see how Obama has a chance!

  2. NO!

It is called a gimmick. McCain is deeply worried about how well Obama is doing and after such a great convention, he decided that he needed a little trick to drum up some fake publicity for himself.

Does he really think that Hillary supporters (women who actually care about other women and their RIGHTS) would be so foolish and idiotic and just jump on his bandwagon now because he picked a woman! He is still the same jack*ss who does not care about the economy, womens rights, our global standing, the environment, etc, etc, etc…………

She is the exact OPPOSITE of Hillary and any woman would be a fool if they switched sides because he picked a n**i pro-life, anti-climate, pro-oil glorified beauty queen as his running mate!

Nice try McCain. We don’t need the female version of yourself.

And what a joke that he says that Obama has no experience! Yes, I would feel so secure with this woman who has no experience running our country if he should just drop dead (a real possibility at his age) I am glad those years in the local PTA will come in handy, and walking down the beauty queen stage, when she needs to deal with global leaders.

McCain questions Obama’s judgement and he turns around an chooses a person so amazingly unqualified to be his president, and possible commander in chief of the most powerful country in the world……..he is more senile, desperate, and out of the touch then I thought.

Women are not so stupid that all the look at is the gender of the party running!

“Oh, look, a woman VP!! Goody, Goody!!! I am now voting for McCain and going against everything I believe in!”

    and

If McCain respects and admires women so much, then why has he engaged in extramarital affairs? Why does he cite the breakup of his first marriage as his greatest failure? Furthermore, why won’t he allow a woman to make her own choice as to what she decides to do with her body?

McCain picked Sarah Palin as VP after knocking Barack for a lack of National & Foreign Relations experience.

She has experience as Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (pop. 5,000).

She’s also been Gov of 1 of our least populated states for 1 yr.

She also was a beauty contest runner-up (Sorry it wasn’t an Int’l Competition, just state).

On a list of 100, she was the least quailified on National & International matters - no where close to Biden, Ridge, Romney, Liberman, or Powell.

  3. She's hot... Seriously she is!

  4. I'd hit it but I sure wouldn't want her answering the phone at 3 am.

  5. Mindnumbingly incredible home run.

I was 70% in support of McCain yesterday.  Today, 102%

She will be a great President in the future.

  6. No. Another elitist that is out of touch with the needs of Americans. McCain needs to send her back to Alaska so she can go hunting.

    Obama/Biden '08!

  7. Yes, so far so good. Still have to do some research but I love the wow factor. I like what I know but need to know more.

  8. I think that it's great for Obama/Biden ticket. Because by choosing a running mate with no foreign policy experience, his argument against Obama's inexperience is very weak now. Obama's running mate Biden is highly experienced in foreign policy. Therefore,Obama can lean on Biden to help him make decisions on foreign policy matters. As for McCain,he's 72 years old with a history of health problems. If he dies in office, then Palin will take over as president with very little foreign policy experience. If Obama ends up not finishing his term, Biden will be ready to take over as president because of his extensive foreign policy experience.

But yeah...by choosing inexperienced Palin for his running mate, McCain can't argue about Obama's inexperience. McCain's judgment can be really criticized now.

Also...my first impression about McCain's pick is that he's targeting women voters including especially disgruntled Hillary supporters. However, her strong pro-life record won't sit well with the women that are prochoice. Her strong conservatism won't sit right with liberals. Therefore, his pick might actually backfire. His pick can be seen as insulting womens' intelligence too.

  9. I live in Wasilla Ak so I know her history and yes I am very excited about the future of America if McCain / Palin win. As soon as she stepped into office she cut the self appointed pay raises, got a gas pipeline deal and got rid of corrupt leaders. Ya I think thats a step in the right direction.

  10. She has more experience in the legislature than Obama, has done more for her state, will not vote to kill babies who are born alive, and has served as both governor and mayor.  Obama served as senator for 143 days.  That's his experience.  She has more to offer than the PRESIDENTIAL candidate!  I think she'll be a much better vice-president AND president than Obama!

  11. desparate measures

    call for desperate actions

  12. I think any of us who are really politically engaged are doing our homework on her as we write here today.

My first impression of her politics is that it seems to suit Alaska's mindset quite well. But as I look deeper into the role of governor in a state like Alaska...it looks more like the equivalent of a mayoralty.

There'll be plenty of scuttlebutt, smear, innuendo and attack on Ms Palin. As ever, I'll leave that to the people best suited to that kind of 'lamery'.

  13. If I was looking for someone to run the school PTA.

No. WHY?  Cause a REPUBLICAN picked her.

But, Sarah Palin is currently under an ethics investigation by the Alaska state legislature.  The details of this investigation read like a trashy novel, and I suspect that the players will soon have newfound celebrity on the national stage.  I’ll try to explain for all you non-Alaskans who suddenly have good reason to want to know more about Sarah Palin.  For those of you not interested in trashy novels, feel free to skip ahead.  Here it is…what we in Alaska call “TrooperGate”.

Sarah Palin’s sister Molly married a guy named Mike Wooten who is an Alaska State Trooper.  Mike and Molly had a rocky marriage.  When the marriage broke up, there was a bitter custody fight that is still ongoing.  During the custody investigation, all sorts of things were brought up about Wooten including the fact that he had illegally shot a moose (yes folks this is Alaska), driven drunk, and used a taser (on the test setting, he reminds us) on his 11-year old stepson, who supposedly had asked to see what it felt like.  While Wooten has turned out to be a less than stellar figure, the fact that Palin’s father accompanied him on the infamous moose hunt, and that many of the dozens of charges brought up by the Palin family happened long before they were ever reported smacked of desperate custody fight.  Wooten’s story is that he was basically stalked by the family.

After all this, Wooten was investigated and disciplined on two counts and allowed to kept his position with the troopers.  Enter Walt Monegan, Palin’s appointed new chief of the Department of Public Safety and head of the troopers.  Monegan was beloved by the troopers, did a bang-up job with minimal funding and suddenly got axed.  Palin was out of town and Monegan got “offered another job” (aka fired) with no explanation to Alaskans.  Pressure was put on the governor to give details, because rumors started to swirl around the fact that the highly respected Monegan was fired because he refused to fire the aforementioned Mike Wooten.  Palin vehemently denied ever talking to Monegan or pressuring Monegan in any way to fire Wooten, or that anyone on her staff did.  Over the weeks it has come out that not only was pressure applied, there were literally dozens of conversations in which pressure was applied to fire him.  Monegan has testified to this fact, spurring an ongoing investigation by the Alaska state legislature.  But, before this investigation got underway, Palin sent the Alaska State Attorney General out to do some investigative work of his own so she could find out in advance what the real investigation was going to find.  (No, I’m not making this up).  The AG interviewed several people, unbeknownst to the actual appointed investigator or the Legislature! Palin’s investigation of herself uncovered a recorded phone call retained by the Alaska State Troopers from Frank Bailey, a Palin underling, putting pressure on a trooper about the Wooten non-firing.  Todd Palin (governor’s husband) even talked to Monegan himself in Palin’s office while she was away.  Bailey is now on paid administrative leave.

As if this weren’t enough, Monegan’s appointed replacement Chuck Kopp, turns out to have been the center of his own little scandal.  He received a letter of reprimand and was reassigned after sexual harrassment allegations by a former coworker who didn’t like all the unwanted kissing and hugging in the office.  Was he vetted?  Obviously not.  When he was questioned about all this, his comment was that no one had asked him and he thought they all knew.  Kopp, defiant, still claimed to have done nothing wrong and said to the press that there was no way he was stepping down from his new position.  Twenty four hours later, he stepped down.  Later it was uncovered that he received a $10,000 severance package for his two weeks on the job from Palin.  Monegan got nothing.

AS FOR EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE...here is what you're getting folks

Before her meteoric rise to political success as governor, just two short years ago Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla.  I had a good chuckle at MSN.com’s claim that she had been the mayor of “Wasilla City”.  It is not a city.  Just Wasilla.  Wasilla is the heart of the Alaska “Bible belt” and Sarah was raised amongst the tribe that believes creationism should be taught in our public schools, homosexuality is a sin, and life begins at conception.  She’s a gun-toting, hang ‘em high conservative.  Remember…this is where her approval ratings come from.  There is no doubt that McCain again is making a strategic choice to appeal to a particular demographic - fundamentalist right-wing gun-owning Christians.  And Republican bloggers are already gushing about how she has ‘more executive experience’ than Obama does!  Above is a picture of lovely downtown Wasilla, for those of you unfamiliar with the area.  Behind the Mug-Shot Saloon (the first bar I visited when I moved to Alaska long ago) is a little strip mall.  There are street signs in Wasilla with bullet holes in them.  Wasilla has a population of about 5500 people, and 1979 occupied housing units.  This is where your potential Vice President was two short years ago.  Can you imagine her negotiating a nuclear non-proliferation treaty?  Discussing foreign policy?  Understanding non-Alaskan issues?  Frankly, I don’t even know if she’s ever been out of the country.  She may ‘get’ Alaska, but there are only a half a million people here.  Don’t get me wrong….I love Alaska with all my heart.  I’m just saying.

    YEEEE HAAAW....Palin for VP....my A.S.S.!!!!

  14. no, he only picked her JUST because he'll get more women to vote...

  15. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but as VP, McCain may as well have picked Jane Jetson.

  16. I could care less because McCain is simply Bush the Sequel. McCain's platform so far has been to ignore problems, harp on his military service which DOES NOT automatically give him leadership ability, and harp on fear. Considering it hasn't helped his numbers he has made a hasty choice for VP. In an effort to get the disgruntled Hillary supporters and also to bring some youth to contrast with McCain's age which seems to be a political hindrance I believe the Republicans have made a hasty choice. This woman is an evangelical Christian, pro-Creationist, pro-life, pro-death penalty, anti-g*y marriage neocon pick. Hillary supporters will not automatically flock to her because she is a woman, her politics conform nicely to neo-con propoganda and people know that. And undecided folks will not flock to her because her youth contrasts with McCain's age. Both of these assumptions undermine the intelligence of voters. So they have chosen her for all the wrong reasons. And thank god for this, because it will BACKFIRE HORRIBLY when Obama

  17. I am thrilled with his choice, as I am now certain of an Obama victory.  Not that the former beauty queen, hockey mom isn't smart, she simply would not be ready to take over when McCain keels.

  18. Yup...I just love it. I am sorry for her that she's been dragged into this and was stupid enough to accept!   McCain is an Obama supporter.

  19. Cause she's a corrupt dirtbag?

  20. I would have prefered that he pick Romney, but McCain is a gambler and he could turn out to be crazy like a fox. This election just got even more interesting. The plot thickens....

  21. Execellent choice!!!

Gov Palin has more experience than Obama has, and Obama thinks he can be president just with empty speechs

    McCain in 08

  22.   She is probably a great person, but she doesn't have the qualifications that's  needed to back up the president.A ex-mayor and governor won't cut it.You need world experience, and years of diplomatic manuvering under your belt.If Hillary was on McCain team, she would have been a great choise.

  23. No. She has no foreign policy experience, something McCain NEEDS.

  24. I liked his vp picked she has more exp than Obama and has helped people fought big oil in AK

  25. Like her for many reasons.

Read about her I like her alot.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin

    Vote McCain/Palin

  26. I don't know if it was a good idea i will have to wait until there is a debate. Either way i am still voting for john McCain.

  27. Absodamlutely. The 'whys' have already been pointed out by all who feel the same way i do.

  28. I think he didn't pick good enogh he dosent get it sorry McCAIN

  29. No, I don't.

From a business standpoint, she has no particular economic credentials, something that McCain is already weak on.  She also replaced board members of Agriculture and Conservation in order to protect a state-run dairy that was failing even with government money invested in it.

She's also a political lightweight who has two years of governor experience, and before that, nothing aside from being mayor of a small town.  McCain will have a harder time attacking Obama on inexperience.

Beyond this, it really doesn't look good for McCain, a man who divorced his wife and married one nearly twenty years his junior, to nominate an even younger woman whose claim to fame before 2006 was coming in second in the Miss Alaska beauty contest.

Quite simply, I think McCain fell flat on this one.  He could have picked someone who would shore up his right-wing credentials better, he could have picked someone who would back him on economic issues, or he could have even picked someone to solidify his military stances, but it feels like he picked a woman just to rub in the "Hillary is not VP" factor.  If that were the case, he likely would be better off with Kay Bailey Hutchison, senator from Texas.

So, no, I don't think McCain chose well.

  30. He could have picked Brittney Spears, I'm still voting AGAINST Obama.

  31. Take the L out of her last name.

That's the kind of VP she will be -- a PAIN.
