Question:

Do you like Swat fly ointment by Farnam?

My horse and her fieldmates are 24/7 pasture horses. I bought some Farnam Swat fly ointment (the clear) last night to rub on their faces to help keep the flys away. I rubbed it into the skin around their eyes really good. While I noticed it seemed to repel the flies some, it didn't seem to really do much. What are your thoughts on Swat? Is it worth the price? Should I expect it to repel better as time goes on? Unfortunately I probably can't return it sinced I used it...I guess I just want some reassurance I didn't waste $10 on a useless product. :P It seems like people like it, I dunno. Just didn't do what I thought it would right off the bat.

My horse is a master at getting fly masks off. Anybody else with pasture ponies have advice on keeping flys away from their eyes? Thank you!

  1. i love swat! but i only use it on minor cuts and in my horses ears, which it works great for because it dosent wear off. so i would buy some acutual repelant and just keep the swat for cuts.

plus, flies in different areas respond to different things and arnt bothered by others. so you might have to try afew things before you find somethng that works for you

  2. I make my own fly repellent, always have done and it's far better [add: and cheaper!] than what you buy in the shops

Add 1 part Citronella oil to 9 parts water and put in a spray bottle :-) You can add 1 part tea tree oil too if you like, this is good for the skin :-)

Tea tree oil and citronella oil are readily available in the chemists or Tesco, and well...water is readily available from your tap :-)

  3. I think you may have misunderstood the point of swat. I love swat but it is made to put on knat bites and fly bites..or owies. To keep the flies off of them. It isn't made like fly spray to repel flies. It is made so flies cannot chew on owies. I like it though!

I use endure roll on for their faces at night. You can find it at any tack store or online.

  4. I use Flysect roll on to repell face flies.  Are you sure you are using the right product?  Swat ointment is a wound treatment that also repells flies.  That would not be what you want to use.

Our horses wear Cashel Crusader long nose fly masks with ears all day.  At night (they are out 24/7) the masks come off and we use the Flysect roll on under their eyes, around the ears, and under the jaw.  We don't have any problems doing it this way, and the product works well.

  5. Swat works great for boo boos and for gooping up their ears to keep the flys away.  For around the eyes and nose I prefer to us G-Natural cream.
