Do you like cops? And if so, why? If not, why not?

Do you not like them because they are present when you are doing bad.

And then think, do you want them to be there when you have a problem they are needed for, such as a hole through your stomach, or investigating a friends death, etc.

Depends on the cop. the ones that want to help innocent people I have no problem with. those that abuse their power and abuse others figure they need their asses kicked to prison and let the other convicts deal with them.

I love them!  I definately want them there if I am having a problem.  Those guys/gals go through a lot on their daily shifts.  Some may have an attitude that seems to always make it to the eyes of the public but the public doesn't know what they have already been through during the shift up to that point.  Before they come to your barking dog complaint, they could have just cleared an abuse of a child call or something similar.  Of course, that has nothing to do with you but that officer can't just forget about it.  Most attitude is unneccessary but officers have bad days too.  They are human.  I work with officers every time I go to work and I know the other side of their job.  It's not pretty.  The bad comments about officers that I usually hear come from the criminals.  Protect and serve is what they try to do...if the public will let them!

To the one of accusing me of having a biased one-sided view...I have not always been a dispatcher but I have always been a citizen.  Sure everyone has a bad day.  You'd be surprised at the number of un-biased citizens that call the police to help them for their bad day.  As far as officers helping officers.  Absolutely!  Officers don't have the luxury to carry half of the weapons and types of weapons that criminals are using.  On the same note, there isn't always help.  Do some research and note that in rural areas, there isn't always someone there to help.  It's 1 officer against whatever he has.  He has to keep himself safe, the citizens safe, and amazingly enough, the cause of the problem safe and prevent further harm.

I have no problem with Police Officers who spend their careers working to the "protect and serve" motto. I have had a few 'experiences' with the law and have only come up against one bad cop. From what I've been told I got off lucky the night that I met him and he was kicked off the force later for a different matter.

In my opinion most Police Officers are fair minded, caring individuals who joined the force to help their respective communities. Unfortunately, when you have been taking out the garbage from our society it's not hard for the smell to get to you once in awhile.

A few overzealous individuals do get past the screening process. But I find that they are a very small minority.

for the most part I dislike them because they seem to do more harm than good in my neighborhood and personal experiences..... many abuse thier authority

EDIT: To the girl above me everyone else has problems too and just as we dont know what they have been through vice versa is also true .... Besides Many Cops were losers growing up so they decided to get authority to feel BIG becuz many are cowards at heart who have confidence in knowing that other cops will come to there rescue when they come across someone who is really tough..

EDIT:To the girl above  I disagree that cops in general really protect anyone rather they lock up people for petty offenses to make quota...... To Underboss I know a few criminals with Badges myself who I try to stay clear of

If a person leads a criminal life then they wouldn't like cops.  I like cops.  They are here to protect us from the criminal element.  I really don't care if criminals kill each other; it saves us taxes.  When my sister was raped, they got there in a matter of minutes and she especially appreciated an older cop who put his arms around her and treated her as though she was his daughter.

I like seeing troopers on our state roads.  I feel more secure when I see police cars.  

They aren't perfect but they are human.  They deal with a lot of scum every day and they wouldn't be human if it didn't affect them in some way.

It really depends on the officer. Some are power hungry thugs while a lot are average citizens looking to do good. Usually those who don't like them listen to the media too much or are criminals themselves. Without the police as a whole, a lot of people wouldn't be here today and it would be a "dog eat dog" world where fear and being armed to the gills would be as commonplace as breathing. Some places are like that in the world, the naysayers can move to those areas and live without the "man" holding them down.

I'M FROM NYC AND I DEAL WITH THE POLICE DEPT. ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE MAJORITY OF THEM ARE CRIMINALS WITH A BADGE. I WON'T GO INTO SPECIFICS. BUT TRUST ME THE COPS I DEAL WITH SHOULD BE IN JAIL. AND TO WILL ABOVE YOUR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON WHAT YOU SAID. JUST BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE POLICE OFTEN TRY TO SILENCE THE VOICE OF TRUTH.

  Yes and I dont care whatever they do. I dont mind if they pull over someone innocent or arrest someone innocent. The thing is imagine your a cop and some guy is acting funny or doing a minor mistimeter. Personally I would go over and arrest him. Cops are doing what most people would never do law inforcment so why not let them have fun?
