It depends on species, but parrots are, on average, much higher maintenance and cost a LOT more money. The bigger and more colorful the parrot, the more it's likely to cost - well into the thousands of dollars.

Good reliable lizards may not live anywhere near as long (your parrot will likely outlive you), but there are several types spanning the gamut from gorgeous color (Chameleons) to dog-like easygoing temperament and hardiness (Bearded Dragons).

Certain species of smaller monitors are also getting popular, but usually folks tend to gravitate toward Beardies, Chameleons (like Veiled and Parson's) and Geckoes. There are scads of color variants and types among just these three genera. Go check out some lizard web sites!
