  1. I taught high school math for 17 years, then worked with gifted middle school students. It makes a big difference where you teach. I was fortunate to be in a wealthy suburban town, where parents were interested and the kids were mostly great. Also, the veteran teachers didn't hog the upper-level courses and you got a good variety of courses to teach. I also got to design new math courses in problem-solving and computer graphics. While the administration wasn't always the best, the staff was professional and it was an intellectually stimulating place to be. Math teachers are in demand, so find a good place to be. Don't be afraid to take some risks--move out of your local area if necessary.

  2. Teaching is great. I love the part when I get to prep all the cool ideas to do in the classroom.  Using the new technology like the smartboard and Web 2.0 has drastically improved the possibilities for the classroom.

I spend hours of my own time enjoying finding new ideas and the best possible way to introduce and teach concepts.  The drawbacks are of course the kids with little or no respect for others ( I know they all have needs but I feel I am trying very hard to create the best atmosphere and possibilities if only they would buy in) , the intensity - meaning there are no breaks, breathers, time to go for a drink or bathroom break and the limited cooperation from parents, ( Oops! I forgot staff meetings)

  3. I am a math teacher - certified 7-12th grade.  I do love my job.  Teaching math is challenging because most people have negative feelings towards the subject.  But I take that as a challenge that encourages me to be a better teacher.  The qualifications vary from state to state-but it will require a Bachelor's degree (4 years of college).  There is a shortage of math teachers in the nation-so it should not be hard to get a job.  I graduated in Dec. 2005 and had a job in February (which is unusual to get a job in the middle of a school year).  There are many difficulties in teaching - and many people will tell you all the negative aspects - but it is a very rewarding job. And you can't get better vacation time.  Hope this helps!

  4. I love teaching.  It is a very hard career choice to take though.  Obvious cons are payment.  Teachers do not get paid nearly what they are worth.  The kids are both pros and cons.  The kids are both incredibly rewarding, and incredibly challenging and annoying.  It's great fun though.  If you like interacting with people a lot and a very challenging career then teaching will be great.  I love it.  Some days are better than others, but I still can't see myself doing anything else.
