Those mascots were actually “Mortuary objects” for children in ancient times!!~~In the past, children died under 7 was considered a omen, they were seeing as parents' renter in past life. The child couldn't have funeral, no tombstone, and parents couldn't attend the child's burial, they were afraid of the child's ghost will wander around in the world and bother other children, so they made these "Fuwa", aka Beijing Olympics mascots to keep company with the dead children.

FYI.

  1. that is a pretty creepy story, but its nice to have some background info on them, seen as the whole of china is painted or lit up with them.

I do like them though, i think they are joyful to look at.. kids also love them.

the beijing olympic fuwas though were also created to be like animals from different areas of the country and autonomous regions. so there's a panda, tibetan antelope, and i cant really remember the others

  2. yeah, I do.

  3. NO. the mascots are not MORTUARY OBJECTS. Each one represents a special animal/object in China.

Bei Bei - Represents a fish.

Jing Jing - Represents a panda.

Huan Huan - Represents the olympic torch

Ying Ying - Represents the Tibet goat

Ni Ni - Represents a kite.

  4. hate it.

it is uncharacteristic, they should make it look more chinese rather than repleted the japanese style.

  5. i was watching CCTV the other day and saw those Fuwa as cartoon series haha... some athletes were kidnapped by cute demons and Fuwa tried to save them lol it was very childish but cute i guess.

  6. they showed up in the closing ceremony... oh well.. i think they look really ugly.

  7. I like them so much! They're really cute!

  8. Not bad.

  9. Your avatar scares me and your story is creeping me out. But I still like those pandas.

  10. there is no connection between Olympic mascots and dead children

either you are too concentrated on death

    or

you have never had toys in your life

playing with a teddy-bear or a meowy cat, did you think about omens and tombstones?

as for me, the mascots were nice and huggable

    :)
