Is it really worth living in Chicago. I mean i know that the entertainment and shopping is great, but is it worth living in the city with all the noise, the crime rates, and the expenises that come with living there.

I was planning on going to college in Chicago, but after reading the prices of some of the apartments and condos, I'm not sure if its such a good idea. I mean i would of course have a roommate and everything but I'm still unsure.

So if you could please give me the pros and cons of living in Chicago that would be great!!

:)

Thank You

  1. yes

  2. Yes.  Chicago's an exciting town, with tons and tons to do.  It's terrific for college students, and there are affordable places, particularly if you have a roommate.  It's only when you get married and have kids that Chicago starts to become noisy and expensive.  While you're single and young, there's nothing that beats the architecture, excitement, bars, restaurants, biking trails, museums and free concerts of Chicago.

  3. Well everyone is different but how much you do or don't like Chicago can be largely dependant on how much money you have. I just graduated college and personally I kind of want to move elsewhere because the job market here is not very great and plus winter is coming (the temperatures are already starting to drop) and I get very depressed during winter. I think Chicago is made up mostly of small businesses. So, if you don't own your own business it's kind of difficult to find work, especially with the economy the way it is. It took me 8 months just to find a different part time job and I'm still looking for full time work.

The noise is not really a big deal unless you particularly don't like noise. Crime is something you have to worry about in almost any city and generally you don't have much to worry about unless you're dealing with the wrong people. Most of the crimes that people are subject to are because of the situations they put THEMSELVES in and the people they CHOOSE to deal with.

I was just talking to my husband today and telling him that I think if I was rich, I would love living in Chicago. But since we don't have much money, are having extreme difficulty finding decent paying work and don't live in the best neighborhood, it's hard for us to enjoy this city and the many things it has to offer.

Since you're going to college I would suggest you talk with your school about housing. But from my experience on-campus housing can be more expensive sometimes than finding your own housing and getting a room mate. At Columbia they wanted about $1,000 per month to stay in a school-sponsored apartment with 3 other room mates, sharing a 2 bedroom.
