  13. I love to play cards - though I'm not a gambler, so games like Poker and Blackjack just don't interest me. My favourite games are all part of the tarot family. Most English speakers don't realize that these were invented for playing card games during the 15th century. They were created by adding fifth suit of cards to the then standard Milanese pack, these new cards took as their theme a traditional Christian triumph procession of the time (some historians suspect that they may represent the procession held to celebrate the birth of Bianca Visconti in 1425). Hence they were called trionfi, meaning triumphs, and from which we get our word trump. It was tarot that marked the invention of trumps in card games!

Most of these games are now played with French suited cards that you probably wouldn't recognize as being tarot at all - though the old Italian suits and trumps are still used in Italy, Sicily, and Switzerland.

Anyway, they are, with only a couple of exceptions, all point-trick games. So, unlike whist or bridge, different cards carry different point values, so that it is not the number of tricks you win that matters but the card points in them.

Ottocento, played with a pack unique to Bologna is, in my opinion, the king of all card games. After that, I enjoy the French game for five players, Point-Tarock best of all. However, there is a huge variety of games with many variations.

There are about a dozen games with the original language terms described at http://www.pagat.com

Then there is my own site where you will find about 25 games with the terms Anglicised and standardised for ease of learning: http://www.tarocchino.com

  14. we play a game at my house that we call "because we can"

it started with a simple set of rules and as we added people (any number)and decks of cards the rules had to be modified and as we made up the rules. when somebody ask why or said you can't do that;  the excuse was always "because we can"

  15. Well some fun card games are BS, poker, go fish, speed, and war.
