  1. Depends what you make of it.  It's absolutely possible to sit in your seat the whole trip like a turnip and have a perfectly miserable time.

It's also possible to take meals in the diner, enjoy the lounge car, make friends with the other passengers, get blown away by the scenery, etc.

Depends on the kind of train.  Obviously a 2-day ride like the California Zephyr is nothing like a ride on the NYC subway.

  2. No, heavens NO, rail travel is much more fascinating.

For one thing, the seats are much roomier and there are no plane gestapo telling you cant get up and move about if you want to.

You are at ground level so you can actually see your surroundings instead of being entombed inside a cloud.

No endless lines of security at TSA, you go and get right on your train. no big hassle waiting to see how much damage your luggage endured.

Much more civilized way of traveling, enjoy your trip! :-)

  3. yeah, pretty much. the only difference is that it's on ground... so bring all the stuff you would on a plane.

  4. Even I never taken Amtrak, of course.

I enjoy ridding SEPTA, New Jersey Transit, Staten Island Railway, Long Island Railroad, Metro-North and NYCT Subways.

    I also take NYCT Subway.

Some part is scenic for me even on elevated subway stations, including PATH trains.

It not boring to me because in our area including SEPTA in Philly, we have interested fleet of subway cars, Metro-North.

At night, Junction Blvd (7) stations are beauitful at sunrise/sunset.

Also, there are interesting scenic route along the commute I take.

  5. Easier to get up and walk around.  Most long distance trains (not commuter trains) have snack cars, dining cars, observation cars, so not stuck in the same seat.  It's been a while, but I remember the seats as much roomier, more leg room, headroom, and not the stale, recirculated air of airplanes.  Better scenery, too.

  6. No it's never boring on a  passenger train. Communication with other is what makes it fun. It's different because you view the backyards of this great land, and see things that no one in a airplane can. If your traveling west over the rookies, then you are in for a beautiful sight to see. So sit back, and relax, and let Amtrak do the driving. Enjoy your trip.

  7. Yes I LOVE it! It's nowhere near as boring as a plane and your ears won't feel like they're gonna explode from pressure change on a train.
