Do you like to visit the zoo?

I don't, but last sunday I took my kids to the zoo, to me it is almost like visiting a prison camp, all these animals couped up in these tiny enclosures, with nothing to do, but sleep all day, waiting for their food, they look so sad to me.

am I the only one who thinks this way, or are there other like minded people out there?

  1. I wholeheartedly agree. I believe it is very sad to cage animals. I know that in some cases, though, these wild critters will only be found in Zoos (that's another subject and also very sad).

The Jacksonville (FL) Zoo has a pretty nice exhibit for the large animals now. They built what is essentially an African plains with a deck walkway overhead for the lions, etc. So, they do have some freedom but to me it is still a prison camp. That's one reason we quit visiting the zoo.

  2. I enjoy the zoo. I think you are presuming upon an animal's feelings. They are well taken care of at zoo's and also give people of all ages a chance to learn more about them. Tight, cramped cages are a rarity. The only change that I think would be valuable is to set large land areas aside as preserves. Otherwise, I think zoo's are a good thing.

  3. Sometimes I think that, then sometimes I think they are just fine! I mean; they get all the food they need, they are in GOOD conditions... If you ask me they have it good! Dont worry about it. Okay?:)

  4. Yes, it's sad. Some places are better than others.

  5. Agree with you and birds rabbits etc should not be confined in cages either!

  6. I think about that in some zoos. Like the one in the village next to mine.

The lion and the tiger (each in his own exhibit) doesn't have enough space to really get the chance to run.

But I have been to WONDERFUL zoos where the animals have enough space to run and feel as free as they're going to get, where they are constantly stimulated by the zoo employees so that they aren't just sleeping in their cages and waiting for their food.

Many of those animals have come from abusive situations in the first place. All of those animals could never survive in the wild.

We have to remember that if it weren't for zoos, those animals would all have to be put down because there just aren't enough wild life conservation places to really be able to afford to keep them.

  7. I took my mum and my daughter to London Zoo a few weeks ago and I thought it was great!  Most of the enclosures have been redesigned with the animals needs in mind and those that cannot be happily housed moved to Whipsnade.

ZSL performs a valuable role in animal conservation and visiting the zoo is one of the few ways that some children will ever encounter animals of any description.

  8. nope

  10. I feel the same way.  If we're going to keep animals, I think organizations should support the zoo and provide better living conditions for them.

  11. Yes I do, I like Regents Park Zoo in London may even go there this weekend as it is only a walk away.
