I love it. I was a climber and a backpacker from a very young age, so I learned all the basics. The bowline, the clove hitch, half hitches, the fisherman's bend, and the rolling hitch. A Prusik knot, ever hear of that one? Basically the same as a rolling hitch, with a couple extra loops, used for ascending a rope. I could go on and on.

Recently, I have gotten really interested in decorative knots. You know the stuff sailors used to do to while away the hours for months at sea. Some of this stuff is so interesting, and so frustrating. If you have some cord, or rope, you can make doormats, coasters for your glasses, bumpers for your boat, or just something pretty to hang on the wall. I find it quite fascinating, actually. How about you?

  1. I haven't gotten that far into it yet, but yeah.  I've made hemp bracelets using the most basic knots.  I have a book that teaches macrame.  You can make a million different things if you know the right knots.  Also I've done some beading and that occasionally involves knots.  Knitting and crocheting are more about loops, but I do that too.  It is quite fascinating.  There is a craft called nailbinding (it has other names, comes from somewhere in northern europe) which seems similar to crochet, except you pull the length of the string through each loop instead of systematically pulling loops through loops.  Very interesting stuff.  Seems like it's existed forever.
