I've lived in new york city since like forever but I have only been to a mexican restaurant once back when I was in JHS and i was wondering what are some good mexican restaurants in the city that u guys have probably been to? your favorite ones..

Great authentic mexican places in the city are hard to come by.  I really like Mama Mexico in midtown - probably the closest I've had to authentic upscale mexican food (i'm from LA originally so i know mexican)

Rosa Mexicano is a good experience, but i wouldn't really call it mexican.  it's more "nuevo mexican" with a modern american twist on a lot of the dishes.

My favorite local haunt is Barrio Chino on the lower east side.  It's more of a bar really, with some great little mexican tapas (steak tacos are great)  i really go for the margaritas, which are my favorite in the city.  go early, it's small and very popular.  they don't take reservations.

There are also alot of really great greasy spoon mexican joints in Greenpoint and Jackson Heights.

One of my favortite mexican places to eat and drink is Cancun.  It's located midtown west on 8th Ave Btwn 55th & 56th St.  

Rosa Mexicana's:  Of the 2 Rosa Mexicana restaurants, I prefer the eastside location over the westside location.  The westside location is on Columbus at 62nd (Lincoln Center) and it's way too touristy for me.   Definitely go to the one on the eastside - on 1st Ave at 58th St.  I highly recommend the pomegranate margaritas and fresh guacomole.  

One other place I like is Agave.  It's southwestern/mexican and located on 7th Ave S btwn Charles & W 10th St.
