Do you live or have you been to canada?

i am wanting to go to canada in a couple of years to travel. i am going to be in vancouver for 2 weeks and then i am going to go to alaska for a couple of days then go back to canada. i am going around between may to october so any month in between that i will be in canada. i just wanted to know what the place is like, what the people like, have you seen the killer whales there, are the shops excpensive and how safe is the place. is it as beautiful as the pictures make out. Thanks

I have lived in Canada for my whole life and I think people are usually nice, but wherever you go you will find rude people.

I took a cruise from Vancouver through Alaska once and we took a whale watching excursion and we saw many whales.

For shops, it depends, there are the brand name shops, the department stores etc. They range in price, the same as the US

I live in Vancouver. It is really beautiful like all those pictures you've seen of. and the best season is summer. If you are a nature lover, then it would be the best to come to Vancouver. and people are really nice. well, there is lots of hobos in Vancouver. Just don't go to East Hasting.

That's pretty onesided... you can't go to Vancouver for a couple of weeks and assume that everyone in Canada is like that. Canada's a huge country, even larger than the States. That would be like me leaving Calgary to go and visit Texas, then come back home and say 'Man, all Americans are uncomfortably conservative, talk funny, and don't take kindly to you if you're not the same colour they are.'

Born and bred Canadian.  Vancouver is a beautiful city..  But it's only one city in a country as large as the US.. Keep that in mind as you form your opinions about your experiences.

You're going to British Columbia.

British Columbia is very beautiful.  Vancouver is a great city, you'll relaly enjoy it.  I find it a bit expensive.. but that's becuase I'm from Alberta where consumer goods are relatively cheaper.  

All in all it's great.  You have to check out Vancouver Island.. it's awesome.  The whole coast/lower mainland is great.

haha alot of backpackers in BC eventually end up in Nelson, so .... if you are so inclined to take a trip through the interior of BC... do go to the Slocan Valley to see some amazing views and great people... and go to Nelson on Kootenay Lake.  It's great.

Vancouver is disgusting and expensive and full of drug addicts. Next to toronto, it's probably the worst possible place in canada you could go.

you'll like Vancouver as the mix of ocean, mountains and greenery are hard not to like.  Pictures dont do it justice.

It rates with Sydney as the #1 liveable city in the world.

Oct-May is our winter and the rainy season.. no snow but lots of rain so be sure to bring appropriate clothes... fleece or gortex jacket works best.  

We have killer whales in the area and have seen mnay just from taking ferries over to vancouver Island (Victoria) but Whale watching tours are the only sure way to see them and those usually only run from May-October (summer) .  Generally west coast folks are relaxed easy going, open and friendly.  I wouldnt expect you'll have any issues with that.    

There are parts of Vancouver. like any city, that are shady but if you stay downtown at a reputable hotel your safety will be fine.  

Shopping in vancouver;  Robson Street downtown and Pacific Centre Mall downtown ... price wise you'll find it slightly more expensive than the US..

Canada is a really big place so two weeks in Vancouver will give you a fairly decent idea of what Vancouver is like.

You will love Canada if your an outdoor person, the people are polite and courteous and you will get along good.  It is expensive though depending on the value of our dollar.  I don't know how old you are but, if you drink don't insult the queen they like the queen and take it personal there.  May to October is nice but, it could get pretty cold during the months of May and October.  It could also rain and its a cold rain.  So have fun and  enjoy yourself.
