  1. I'm in SoCal and the competition is quite stiff.  A lot depends on the salon you work for whether you are renting booth space, have to pay for supplies or whether you are an employee and being paid an hourly rate expected to make up the difference with tips.  The real money IS in owning your own salon and offering more services than just manicures, fills and spa pedicures (ie waxing, massage, hair, etc.).  The full service salons out here just make more income because they offer services that everyone needs and a variety of them.  Right now our economy is slow and people are spending less on services.  So, they might have their nails filled but forgo the spa pedicure to save the 18 bucks.

  2. if you are an employee, expect to earn minimum wage. if you decide to get your own clients i.e. go door to door, you can earn around £90 a day minus travel expenses at the best of times. If you are already in the business world, there is good money to be earnt in beauty, and rather than waste time qualifying, you can look into the costs of hiring staff, opening premises and the risks involved. The best way to opening your own salon is not from the bottom up.
