  1. A beef version would be called a Cottage Pie.

    Herbed Cottage Pie

The herbs give an interesting variation in this old-fashioned favourite.

    Ingredients

    Serves: 4

    1 Tablespoon Olive oil

    1 Onion, chopped

650 Gram Lean minced beef (1 lb 6 oz)

    2 Teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

110 Gram Button mushrooms (4 oz) sliced

400 Gram Can of chopped tomatoes (14 oz)

    1 Tablespoon Tomato purée

    1 Teaspoon Yeast extract

    150 ml Beef stock ( 1/4 pint)

    6 Tablespoon Red wine

750 Gram Potatoes, mashed (1 lb 10 oz)

75 Gram Cheddar cheese, grated (3 oz)

    2 Tablespoon Fresh basil, chopped

    2 Tablespoon Fresh chives, snipped

    Method

    Preheat the oven to 190 °C / 375 °F / Gas 5.

Heat the oil and fry the onion until brown.

Lower the heat and add the beef and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 10 minutes.

Add the mushrooms, tomatoes, tomato purée, yeast extract and stock, cook for 10 minutes.

    Add the wine and simmer.

Mix in the cheese and herbs to the mashed potato.

Spoon the meat into a deep ovenproof dish. Top with the herby potato.

    Bake for 30 minutes.

  2. You can make the sauce simple with cans of cream of mushroom soup. Pour over meat on bottom layer, corn, then mashed potatoes, top with shredded cheddar and bake at 375 until bubblie!

  3. Yes,pretty much the same as my Momma did.

Every family should have their own.

Start with meat and mashed potatoes.

  4. Yes.  Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb/mutton (hence the name!).  If you make it with beef, it's called Cottage Pie.

It has a base of minced lamb.  You can add vegetables, etc, to your liking.  Top it with mashed potatoes however you like them, then bake it in the oven until it's golden.

    Here's the Gordon Ramsay version:

Edit: to moisten the meat and give a gravy, you can add some stock and/or red wine.  If you like it thick, add a little plain flour to the meat when it's browned and then add the liquid gradually.

  5. My mummy does

    =D

    Its yummy

She puts in mince, peas, corn, tomato sauce, bbq sauce, salt, pepper, herbs, gravy (just a little bit) and then potato on the top with grated cheese.
