Do you need Rhogam every time you have spotting throughout your pregnancy?

I am five weeks pregnant and RH-. I had small amount spotting and received Rhogam. I was told that I will need Rhogam EVERY time I have spotting throughout the pregnancy. This seems a little excessive, especially since my insurance does not cover Rhogam. Is it really needed every time you spot?

  1. I think they are being very very very cautious!  If your blood ends up mixing with the baby it can compromise the baby's life.  It is very important to listen to the doctor about this.

  2. No, you will not need it everytime. The shot protects you for a good 3 months. You will have the shot once again around 28 weeks (most Rh- women receive it then), and then one more time when the baby is born if he or she Rh +.

I am Rh- as well, and had spotting during my 1st trimester. I received the Rhogam shot once at 7 weeks, received my second shot at 29 weeks, and chances are my baby will be Rh+ (because my husband) so I will get it after I give birth.

    Good luck!

  3. I am RH- too. I only had to take Rhogam shot only in the begining and after if had both of my boys.I never had any spotting. You should call your doctor and ask again how often you may need the shot. I hope I've helped.
