  1. If you are driving from USA to Canada, or even just walking across if they allow that, you will only need a passport to cross the border as of June 2009. That is, if you are a Canadian or US citizen.

As of September 2007, you are required to have a passport for any international flight. So that means to fly to Canada you would need a passport.

As of January 2008, the only change they made at the border crossing was that you now need some sort of official document that shows your nationality, such as a birth certificate and/or driver's license.

Starting June 2009 (or sometime after that), you will need a passport or other officially recognized ID to cross the border. US Homeland Security are making that mandatory. It may be a passport, a NEXUS card, or some other new type of card they plan to introduce to speed up crossings.

I've included the latest details I have from US Customs and Border Protection and from Canada Border Services Agency below.

  2. I live in Windsor, Ontario, and therefore cross the Ontario-Michigan border at least twice at month.

At present, assuming you are an American citizen and travelling by LAND (not flying) you require the following two things: (1) valid government-issued photo ID, such as your driver's licence, and (2) your original birth certificate.  This is all you will require, for now, travelling from either end.

The passport issued has been delayed till at least June, 2009, as they are still toying with the idea of going with some form of enhanced driver's licence as an option.

    Relax and enjoy your trip!

  3. Here's an offcial answer from someone who lives in the city and hears our lcoal news as to what is going on. I cross the border weekly no passport is required for me to enter canada or leave canada to return home I am a US citizen no duel citizenship or anything;. Yes while its true there is speculation that people say you need passports as of now that is not true. It is said becuase past deadlines have called for us citizens to have passports but that was pushed back until June 2009 but not to worry our news is telling us that efforts by our local representitives are trying to get rid of the rule all together and they say not to listen to Chertoff because h**l be gone soon anyway aafter any new administration takes over. If you are a NY State resident we are going to be offered his summer enhacned drivers lisences that will if needed take the place of passports for less money than a passport.

  4. Travel by land or sea to Canada from the USA does not require a passport until June 2009.

I assume you are driving there (land).  If you are flying, yes you do need a passport.
