Do you need a S-Video cable to tape

Question

to tape onto a VHS tape in your VCR? I have some footage i'd like to transfer to a VHS tape--so i played the tape on the TV and put on the VCR and pressed record and it didn't record... can't figure out how to copy a tape onto a VHS tape.pleaese help me if you know how.
