Alright, different sites state differently. One site says if you have more than three females total, then you HAVE to have a USDA license. One site says if you just have a pair, you have to, no matter what. Bf and I want to start breedind, but we need to figure this stuff out first. Thanks!

  1. The United States requires that you acquire a USDA license if you have 3 or more breeding females. This does not include retired animals, but you must be ready to defend the fact that they are in fact retired. It would be a good idea to pursue a license even if you start out with one female. It would be easier in the long run to just expand, rather than have to wait for proper authorization.

Breeding is a very rewarding, yet demanding hobby. Please make sure that you are getting into this for the right reasons. Many breeders suggest that you own hedgehogs as pets ONLY for around 2 years so you can become comfortable with their typical care. I have heard too many questions from people who jumped into breeding who were mistaking typical behaviours like self-annointing for birthing complications. I am sorry if you are seasoned hedgehog enthusiasts, I just want to make sure you are doing everything right :)

Another thing is that you must make sure that your breeding stock are of the highest quality. Breeding poor animals creates unhealthy animals that are more likely to have genetic diseases. Find a breeder who will sell you a breeding pair and register all offspring (and parents if required) with the IHR (International Hedgehog Registry).

Above all, good luck. Remember to take lots of pictures. The babies don't stay small for long!

  2. I guess it depends on what area you live in. But normally, it's just if you have three or more breeding females.

Just be sure that you've done your research and everything - including if anything goes wrong.

    Good luck.
