Does anyone know if you HAVE to have your current passport to take a cruise to Mexico from the U.S.? Or can you still get away with one that has expired or use your birth certificate? Mine expiried in Nov. 07 and I will be returning before Jan. 1, 2008. Thanks for any info! Happy Holidays!

  1. definitely need.

  2. Sorry, the previous answers but for Charlie are incorrect.  Here is the info from the source.

    LAND AND SEA TRAVEL

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

    JANUARY 31, 2008

U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

    SUMMER 2008

At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.

  3. You need one to travel to Canada and Mexico by boat and plane. So yes, renew your passport.  You can use a drivers license and birth certificate if you are an American citizen if you are driving by car  or walking over the border like we do here in San Diego - for now.  January 2008 is when passports are required for all forms of travel.

  4. Passports are required to travel by AIR to and from Mexico NOW.  They are NOT required to travel by LAND or SEA until after SUMMER 2008.  See website below and read top half of the page carefully to see the CURRENT info.  Some cruise lines want all passengers to have passports even tho the law does not yet require it so it is wise to call your cruise line and ask them.

  5. It used to be you could travel to Mexico without a current passport or with a birth certificate. I did it many years ago. However, that time is passed. Current passports are now required. It has become a sticky and risky business to leave to United States to go anywhere without a passport. I think you can still travel to Canada without one but I am not sure of that.

    Good luck!

  6. of course you have to have an up-to-date passport! it doesnt matter the distance of the place, if its out of the country you have to have an up-to-date passport. you really better get one soon, do NOT take this risk or ur not gonna have very happy holidays. well good luck with that. i hope u enjoy ur cruise.:)

  7. FOR CRUISES YOU NEED TO HAVE A PASSPORT AND NOTHING ELSE COUNTS.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT YOU CAN GO GET ANOTHER CURRENT PASSPORT IN L.A.  YOU JUST NEED TO HAVE PROOF  OF THE CRUISE AND IN UNDER 2 HOURS THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE PASSPORT!!!!!!!!

HAVE A GREAT TIME,,, GREAT CRUISE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!
