  1. The village where I live allows fire pits, but with restrictions.  There are regulations concerning placement on the lot, distance from structures, etc.  It must be surrounded by non-combustible material (mine is circled by field stones), and must be inspected by the fire chief prior to first use.  Check with your local fire dept. to see what's required where you live.  Good luck.

  2. A fire will still burn without the pit, but having a pit helps to prevent the fire from creeping across the ground as the grass dries out. I stacked concrete blocks to make a ring 12 feet across and 2 blocks high to use for parties. Use sticks and paper to get the fire started---Please, no gasoline, been there-done that, it hurts. The flame followed the gas right back to the can and blew it up in my hand.

  3. If you are out of the city limits you can pile wood up in a clearing without a firepit, but be sure not to be close to any woods that might catch fire

If you are in the city limits, you need to check local ordinances first.

If the wood is dry, it won't be a problem starting the fire, but you may need some charcoal lighter fluid or Diesel fuel to get it started.
