Do you need a license to own(and buy) an exotic animal in California?

I want to buy a fox or other exotic and I wanted to know if I need a license:)

I've read and heard the same thing as "oregano13" - permits are required for all exotic (or, as CA puts it, "wild") animals but are usually only given to scientific and educational institutions and also to shelters that "destroy" them or transfer them out of state. And those permits are usually pretty hard to obtain.

Yes.  Pretty much all exotic animals are very much illegal to keep in California without a special permit.  They are one of the more restrictive states.  Permits are applied for through the state Department of Fish and Game, however they are not generally granted to private citizens for personal pets.  I have only ever heard of them being granted to people and organizations using them for educational purposes, the permits are very difficult to get.
