  1. No they are not required but a lot of folks get them anyway just to be safe.

    Malaria is just not a big problem in Costa Rica!

    Unless you are planning on being down on the West Coast of Costa Rica around Golfito for any period of time.


  2. There isn't really a malaria vaccination, per se, but there are different pills you can take while in mosquito infested areas. Many of the different pills require that you take them awhile before and after exposure.

    Although it is not required, a lot of people do insist on taking the meds, especially in areas like Alajuela, Limón (not the city of Puerto Limón), Guanacaste, and Heredia provinces.

    I personally don't like the meds because they have a lot of harsh side effects that aren't too much fun like stomach aches and super sensitivity to the sun. So... I just make sure to wear tons of bugspray with deet in infected areas, and I haven't had any problems!!
