Everybody requires a passport now, gone are the days when US Citizens could enter Mexico on a Birth Certificate or Drivers License. This is actually not a bad thing as it helps to have one for travel to any other Country around the world. It's a Legal Document, so valid as proof of age etc.

As you enter Mexico, your passport will be stamped and your entry visa form that you complete on the plane will be registered and the bottom part returned to you. You must keep that safe and with your passport because you need to hand that part to the Airline staff as you head for your plane on the way home.

For sure a passport is needed to fly or go by Cruise Line. You can drive, believe it or not. Crossing the border only takes your drivers license and birth certificate. US Customs will check you through or if you are one of the random picks you will be searched.

The stamp or Visa is not required unless you plan to sell items or work in Mexico. The laws for working in Mexico will cost you or your company cash.

The new law is even if you are a citizen of the U.S  you need a passport to travel to another country and if you don't have one when you're traveling back you will be let in but you will be fined.

Most of the writers assume that you want to come back to the US. But I can see from ur question that you are only interested in going there and not coming back. Thus the answer is NO, you do NOT need a passport or any kind of stamp on anything to go to Cancun.

Cancun, like many of the really big tourist cities in Mexico, is interested in making it as easy as possible for you to get there so they can make money from your visit (hotels, resturants etc).

Even if you did choose to come back, the US knows that getting a passport now is really difficult because everyone in the world is trying to get one at once and the whole system is backed-up so bad that the border patrol is not really going to enfource it. The requirement has been posponed two times and it's not really serious if ur an American. They'll let you in without any hassle.

I know for a fact that if ur white, black or even hispanic and have a good ID nobody will even question it. You do not need a passport to come back.

The new law is............any person entering or re-entering the US must have a valid passport.  Because they got so backed up on issuing them, they will allow you to travel on the receipt that you have applied for your passport.  Not sure how long this will be allowed.  You apply for the passport.....there is a place to go online and check the status....you print your receipt showing that you have applied.....that along with your photo id will get you into the states.  This is requirements of the US....not Mexico.  Just get the passport.....it is the only way to travel.....anywhere.

...It's a good idea to have a Passport (Mexico will let you in) but coming back into the US, well you might get "slowed down a bit"...The Passport is the "golden-key" to travel...
