Do you need a pass port to go to Nova Scotia??

In the fall I'm taking a ferry from cape cod to Nova Scotia do I need a pass port to go??

Um.... I don't know the answer but I was wondering if I were to travel by air plane from Ottawa to Nova Scotia then would I need my passport? Also, I am only 12 and same with my friend, but she has an expired passport! You say that you need a type of photo Id, is that true, if so can she bring her expired passport to use as her photo ID. (remeber she is only 12 so she has no drivers license!) Please help me, oh and is Geust8447 right? Is that true? PLEASE HELP ME A.S.A.P.!!!!!! thanks! <3
