  1. I did last year on a Canadian Cruise

  2. If you are cruising to Canada the answer is no you do not need a passport.  Beginning June 1, 2009 you will need a passport.

  3. Here are the US Government regulations:

  4. Depends on where you are from.  If you're American you need only a birth certificate, but I would still recommend a passport as you'll have less hassle

  5. NO, No, If you are going on your cruise this year or before next summer then the answer is NO!!

The new rules absolutely requiring a passport of every person going on a cruise DO NOT go into effect until next year, summer of 2009. Right now if you board a cruise ship in a US port and will return to a US port, neither you will NOT be required to have a passport. What you WILL need is proof of citizenship which can be a passport OR a certified copy of your birth certificate, PLUS proof of identify which can be a driver license, or any other government issued photo ID.

It takes about 4 to 6 weeks to get a passport and so if you have that much time before you cruise you should get one.  The Passport for an adult is $100  and you can print a copy of the application and get all of the information you need about applying on the US State Department's Passport Office web site:

Most cruise line do strongly suggest/recommend that you get a passport because if something happens and you need to fly back to the US you WILL need a passport.
