June 2009 is the official date when you will need a passport for land travel. Currently all air travel requires a passport. Land travel you can return with a birth certicate and governement ID, such as a drivers license.

No, not until Jan, 2009, but you do need some sort of ID, so if you do not have a driver license, then do bring your birth certificate. Also whatever you do, do not get into any trouble there without a passport. Now that could be a problem.
