Do you need a passport to book your flight?

Im traveling from the US to Costa Rica. Im in the process of getting a passport but it takes a while. Can I book my flight without my passport number? I know, of course, Ill need it for getting on the plane, but just booking wise I was wondering. Thanks!

Oh yes, you can definitely book your flight, just prior to departure, the airlines asks you for your passport number to expedite the check in process. but its NOT at all required.

I don't think so..you're just booking a flight I don't see the point why should they ask for a passport..but sometimes it depends but usually they don't.

I've never been asked passport details when booking a flight, so no.

Bear in mind you can book a flight months in advance and before you get a passport.

As you already know, you do need it to travel.

No you don't need it to book your flight. Just once you actually take the flight.
