I heard that after june this year a passport is required to cross the US border. For anyone to drive back now you just need your ID and birth certificate, I think. I really need the facts for a spontaneous trip.

  1. you will need a passport in June, but now you need id and birth certificate but you need to apply for a passport now because they are having huge backups.

  2. Right now you only need a passport if you are flying in and out of Mexico.  To go by land (driving) or sea (cruiseship) you need a government-issued photo ID such as a drivers license, and a CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate.

This is the official US Gov't website, specifically the "travel to Mexico" page...

  3. This is correct!

If I were you, I would apply for a US Passport Book for future use.
