Question:

Do you need a passport to drive over to Niagara Falls?

I have read different things. I know you need a passport to fly to Canada from the US, and I have read that you DON'T need one to drive. However, I just talked to a booking agent, and she said she drove there but was turned back because they asked for a passport, but she also said they don;t ALWAYS ask for one.

Anyone know what's up with the passport thing? or who to call to get a definitive answer?

  1. I just looked this same thing up today. but i second exactly what MB said. You need your picture id and your birth certificate to cross over by land.

  2. yeah, you should definately have one.

  3. Hi.  I live at the Windsor-Detroit border and cross all the time.  At present the following is required for a LAND crossing:

    (1)  valid government issued photo ID, such as your driver's licence, and

    (2)  your original birth certificate.

Not one or the other, but both.

Of course, a passport is ideal but is not mandatory until at least June, 2009.  A Nexus card also works, but you can't get that without having a passport first.

I also work at Casino Windsor (well, now Caesars) and speak with American customers all the time who travel over with just the above two types of documentation.

If I were you, I'd consider another travel agent.  Her information about the land travel stipulations is wrong.

That information is something she should totally be 100% sure about.

Hope this helps, and have fun!

  4. You do not HAVE to have a passport until 2009.  You must have a birth certificate and a picture ID though.  Check with the Customs and Boarder Patrol website for more information.  I just went a few weeks ago and had no problems and I crossed the boarder several times to see all of the different attractions.

If push comes to shove, you can see the falls from the American side and it is still well worth it!!

  5. To cross the boarder in reality you only need a photo ID and a supporting ID. Thats strictly when you drive. Its just easier to get a passport thou

When you fly you can only enter the US with a passport.
