  1. You need a passport to go anywhere except for Canada and Mexico. And that's about to change soon. It's easier to just have a passport, because if you don't, you have to bring all kinds of other papers to show that you actually exist.

  2. Well, I'm going to confuse you even more. The answer is that it depends on the country. Some require passports, some require visas and some require proof of return tickets.

I base it on my experience visiting 16 destinations and on the first site below, which gets its information from the State Department and the individual island consulars.

You don't necessarily need a passport to enter every destination, but you need one to get back into the U.S. You only need your shipboard ID if you stop anywhere via a cruise.

In the case of Dominican, what you really need is a tourist card which can be purchased on your arrival at the DR airport or at a DR consular office prior to leaving.

The first site below covers most details from both the State Department and the DR government. The second site has basics from the DR tourism bureau. The third is the U.S. State Department.

  3. Yes a Passport is needed to any country unless a special alledgment has been done for further info go to foreing

    CURRENTLY:

U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

    LATER:

On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI.  The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

  4. Yes, to both questions

  5. Yes, you need a passport to fly from the US to most Caribbean Islands.  BUT THERE ARE FOUR ISLANDS YOU CAN VISIT WITHOUT A PASSPORT.

The exceptions are the US Territories in the Caribbean:  Puerto Rico and the three islands of the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas,St. John, St. Croix.

If you fly to the US Territories, make sure you do not transit in another country.

  6. Yes cause it's in the Caribbean it's not like it's apart of the US.
