  1. You will need to buy MEXICAN insurance and it will probably cost you $100 for the week. You will also have to buy a tourist sticker for your car.  So you need to get to the border a good hour or two before you actually plan to go over.  Be sure to have your title and registration with you, too.

If you plan to return to the U.S. AFTER the 8th of January you will HAVE TO HAVE A PASSPORT... you don't need a passport to enter Mexico at this time.

  2. You do not need passports for LAND travel to and from Mexico until AFTER SUMMER 2008.  See website below for the CURRENT info and read the top half of the page carefully.  if you are only going to Baja or Sonora , you do not need a car permit.  if you are going elsewhere, you will need the permit.  See 2nd website.  See 3rd website for excellent, cheap car ins. for Mexico.  you may drive in Mexico with your U.S.license.  If there is a certain city you want to visit, you could consider taking the bus...cheap, comfortable, saves the trouble of driving...and may even be cheaper.  Easy to get around in cities there due to many buses and cheap taxis.
