  1. The true answer is NO, but, i'd still have one. I'd rather be safe than sorry. In this Post 9/11 world, to have more documentation is better than less.

  2. Yes I believe you need a passport to go anywhere outside the country!

  3. It depends on if you are driving or flying across the border, if you are driving then no you do not need one.  And if you are flying yes, but currently there is such a high demand for passports it's taking over 2 months to get one.  So if you are planning on going before then you can get a letter stating that you have applied for a passport and that will allow you to fly there.  This also applies to Canada, and some of the smaller ilsands in the Gulf of Mexico that didn't require passports before such as Jamacia.

  4. Charlie is almost right.  I'm not sure if its his wording though. But if you are flying...

If you don't have one, you need to apply for a passport.  Then, before you leave, (if you haven't received your passport yet, obv) you need to go on the travel.state.gov site and print out the status of your application page.  You will need to enter last name, birth date, and last four digits of the social security number in order to get the status.

If you just show up with the receipt, they will not let you go.  You NEED to print out that page, and bring it in.  Receipts will not be accepted.  You also NEED an ID such as a driver's license to prove your identity, if you are over 16.  I thought I had forgotten mine and they weren't gonna let me out of the country.

  5. If you are FLYING, the answer is yes.  If you are going to Mexico by plane before

Sept. 30 and do not have a passport, you can apply for one, then as it gets close, and you do not have it ( which IS what will happen) you can FOLLOW the directions at the website below for the "flexibility" program and travel with your receipt...proof of application ...for a passport.  If you are driving you do not need a passport to travel to Mexico until Jan. 2008 at the earliest.

  6. No, you do not need a passport as of right now. However, there was a law passed that was supposed to take effect in February of this year that would have made it a requirement to have a passport to go to canada and mexico. That law was suspended due to severe numbers of people applying for passports before their summer vacations. The law will however still take effect sometime later this year or at the beginning of next year. So, depending on the time you wish to go there you may be required to have one, just check up on the laws before you go. I would recommend getting one anyways because you will be addicted to travel after your first international trip.

  7. not if you are from the US. you just need to have your drivers license. - like the guy above me says, you need one if you fly. if you are flying it might be easier to fly into san diego and then drive down (mexico border is less that 1/2 hr from sd airport)
