Do you need a passport to go to Mexico when you're a US Permanent Resident, or just a Green Card and US DL?

Going to a wedding next weekend in Mexico, for the first time. I'm a US Permanent Resident, but was wondering if I should take my passport as well as my CA driver's license and Green Card? I don't want to be refused entry back across the border after a hard weekend drinking Coronas!

  1. You need a passport.

Airlines will not allow you on a plane without it.

  2. No passport is needed to travel to mexico, but depending on how far south you are going you might consider taking it along just so you aren't messed with too much. to re enter the country an american issued DL is all that is needed.

  3. Your passport should be good enough.

  4. As a U.S. green card holder, you are not required to also carry your passport to cross the Mexican border by LAND until June 2009...however, border patrol does appreciate seeing that passport...so carry it...just makes it easier.   And , of course, you need your green card too.  Then of course, you may be one of those that gets waived through with no i.D. asked for...ya never know.

  5. Technically you only need your green card and ID to drive across (you need a passport to fly), but since you have a passport, it couldn't hurt to take it along.

  6. as of this year you must have a passport to go to mexico, they cost more than $50 but less than $100.

  7. If you are a "Permanent Resident" of the US, then you are not required to have a "Passport" to travel to Mexico.

If you are a Permanent Resident of the US you can not apply for a passport... you need to be a US citizen in order to apply for a passport.

If you are a U.S. Citizen, then YES... you do need a passport if you are flying to Mexico.

You don't need a passport if you are driving to Mexico and you are a US Citizen.

You will need a passport starting January 2009 if you are driving to Mexico...  but not now.

Since you are a "Permanent Resident" all you would need to travel to Mexico is your permanent residency card and I would take an ID or Drivers license... just in case they ask for one.  Plus, it's a good idea to take your ID or Drivers Lic. while you are visiting another country.
