  1. yes. any other country you go to will need a passport. That way, they know if you are a citizen.


  2. No.  You need some proof of residency to come back, though.

  3. Assuming you are an American citizen and are crossing by LAND (not flying), the following documentation is required: (1) valid government issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, and (2) your original birth certificate.  This is not one or the other, but both.

    And, of course, if you do have a passport that is your best bet in place of the above, but it is not mandatory until at least June, 2009.  They have continued to push that date farther back as they may still be looking at the possibility of going with enhanced driver's licenses.
