  1. THOSE answerers really don't know what's required...and don't travel much.  You need a Passport (not just a BC) to go across the border---UNLESS you are registered for NEXUS.  (Do they even know what that is?)  It doesn't matter if its a train, abus, an airplane (commercial or private)---row boat, walking,,, whatever....YES...to all---and to any I've forgotten about!  If they think I'm wrong, try to cross Customs without a passport and see how far you get!

  2. Passports are only needed for air travel.  ID plus birth certificate is for land travel.  Trains travel on land.

Add:  Sorry, but I have to correct the incorrect answers below from Dark Eyes and Sue.  Might you trust the State Department as a good resource?  Because it states that you do NOT need a passport to cross the Canadian border by land, EITHER direction.

    Read it here:

    http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp...

  3. No passport needed from U.S. into Canada.

  4. not true. you can't get across the border in a car with just a birth cert and id.  you need a passport to cross the border in a car, too.  I believe the rule is:  you need a passport to exit the country, because you need a passport to re enter the country.  Period.  End of Statement.

Check with the State Department, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

  5. You do not need a passport currently to Drive to Canada, Flying Will require one. Anything that is Land or Sea does not require a passport Now, But in June 1, 2009 it Will be Required.  It's beautiful train trip, have a wonderful time!! :)
