I know you don’t need it to come back in the U.S. but I have been told that once you go into Mexico, in order to get a permit, you need a passport. By the way in a U.S. citizen

  1. DUH... IF U CROSS THE BORDER ABY WAY UL NEED A PASSPORT

  2. Yes , you must have.  Not just "A" vehicle , it must be yours.

You do not need anything unless you are going deep in to Mexico.  If you stay within the 30k zone you do not need anything.

Bring a credit card with you and you should only have to pay$50.00 for the permit and your tourist visa.

  3. Yes you do!

Because you are passing the border, it requires a passport...just like flying.

When I go to Canada, by driving, you also need a passport.

  4. YOU are correct, you do NOT need a passport to travel to Mexico by land.  Other answerers are passing on misinformation...you can see site below to confirm that passports are not needed for LAND trave.  Now...a passport has NOTHING to do with the vehicle permit.   See 2nd site below for the car permit info.  This site tells you what you need.  Do have TWO certified birth certificates with you as well as several paper coipes...always in Mexico...many times you will be asked to show these or turn in one.  You will need a passport withina year...and it does streamline things...so it is good to get one.  3rd site below is my fav. Mexican car ins. place.

  5. You either need a passprt or a new passport card that allows entrance and exit from Mexico and Canada.
