Do you need a passport to travel across the American/Canadian border by land?

I was just wondering if the requirements for a passport are in effect yet or if birth cert. & license are still acceptable when crossing by car @ the border.

  1. If you are a US citizen you do not need a passport to drive across the Canadian border.  Your government issued photo ID such as your driver's license and your birth certificate to prove citizenship are all you need.  Best of luck.


  2. The new rules say that you do need a passport to go from the United States to Canada and back. As for the requirements, check and find out.

  3. You don't need a passport when traveling by land or sea (until june 2009)

    You need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and birth certificate. You need a passport when traveling by air

  4. You can still use just photo id (drivers lic) for now but will need a passport soon. They changed the rules but as there have been delays getting passports they have held off on the change.
