I used to go back and forth by ferry without a passport until about three years ago when they just kept looking for more detailed and specific identification and it became much less hassle to get the passport. It saves time and aggravation to have one.

Keep it simple. In the world entry to a foreign country requires a passport. Same in R.O.I.

This question is asked at least 3 times a week. I think you should contact the Irish Embassy or Consulate in the UK and ASK THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!
