Do you need a passport to travel to Ireland.?

I didn't add that I live in England. From England to Ireland return, and either plane or ferry.

I know you would need a passport for the Republoic of Ireland (Southern Ireland). Not sure for Northen Ireland.

If you want to leave the country and return (or even enter the other country) you need a passport.  The rules are now changing so that even if you want to go to Canada or Mexico, you will need a passport.

1. you will not require a passport provided you are a U.K citizen, born there that is.

2.you will require a passport if you are a citizen of the commonwealth or are a U.K resident or a holder of a passport obtained by residency or asylum or some other means, you will also be required to obtain a visa with the exception of Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand for stays of less than 3 months.

A drivers licence or form of indentification establishing birth is all you require if you are in the first category.

There are immgration checks at all entry points , including the North of Ireland land border.

These were introduced 2 years ago because of the influx of Nigerians traveling to Ireland seeking asylum, Having outstayed their visa's in Britain and exhausted their asylum applications there.

If you are going only from the UK to Ireland and back (no other countries involved) then you do not need a passport but you do need photo ID eg driving licence.

If you don't have a driving licence either, check with the plane or ferry operator in advance what ID is required.

Yes, it's better to get one. Think that ID like a driving license might surfice, but better to get a passport. It's easier at customs !
