  1. we got back (by bus) with a certified birth cert. and a drivers license.

  2. If you want to come back to the US then yes you will need one to re-enter.

  3. Passports will not be required until June 2009 (or later) for land travel across the US border. Since January 31, 2008, either a passport or a birth certificate with a photo ID such as a US Drivers license are required. Original Birth Certificates are preferred, but a photo copy will also be accepted for the time being. Minors 18 or younger will not need a photo ID, but will need a Birth Certificate or Passport.

If you do not have passport or birth certificate you will not be refused re-entry into the US, but border officials will write you a warning.

  4. According to the US Government website you MUST have a passport if you are FLYING in and out of Mexico.

If you come by land (driving) or sea (as on a cruise ship) you must have a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID card) and a certified copy of your birth certificate OR a passport OR a passport card.  But for now it is not absolutely necessary to have the passport if you are driving in.

If you have time it's best to go ahead and get the passport, as you will be needing it by June 2009; also it expedites the process.

  7. You don't need one to go to Mexico by bus, but you now need one to get back in the U.S. no matter how you travel (air, boat, car/bus, whatever).
