I am having a deck built soon. Does anyone know what the guide lines are in florida for decks? It is going to be 8 ft wide and 12 ft long. Also if anyone has pictures of basic decks please email them to me so I can get some ideas. Thanks for your help. Brandy1757@yahoo.com

  1. That is correct - it is based on county.  We do need one in Clay County though.

  2. This may vary from county to county. The only thing I was able to find was this statement from the Seminole county building permit website:

    Question:

Why do I need a permit to complete work on my own home?

    Answer:

The Florida Building Code requires a permit. The code does this to insure that permits are secured. This is the first step. Once the permit is issued, there are various inspections that are required throughout the duration of the work. Through these inspections, we have assurance that the codes being adhered to, and the buildings are safe for the public at large.

    This is on:

You may want to search for "planning and development" sites in your county to see if you need a permit for a deck. It's hard to know unless you can call the proper organization on a county basis.
