  1. Benadryl and Unisom are both over the counter pills, where you do not need a prescription.  Anything beyond that, you will need a presciption.

  2. Anti-histamines, the most effective non-prescription sedatives, can be obtained over-the-counter at a registered pharmacy only.

The sleeping pills you see on supermarket shelves are simply herbal medicines. Many people find these to be completely ineffective.

Ask for "Nytol One a Night" at your local pharmacy. These anti-histamines can only be found behind the counter, for legal reasons. I found these particular pills extremely effective.

In response to Dr Frank below, only the benzodiazepines have addictive properties. This is not true of anti-histamines. However, people frequently develop a tolerance to anti-histamines as their sedatives effects tend to weaken after a few nights of taking them.

  3. I am afraid there ain't such an animal as a good sleeping pill.

Overall they are basically a disaster, it takes only 3 consecutive nights taking sleeping pills to get withdrawal symptoms on the 4th night. Long term use on average results in the patient getting to sleep 20 minutes sooner and sleeping only 30 minutes longer than they did pre-medication. Also of course if they try to sleep without them, things are much worse than pre-medication. The mere act of taking an active sleeping pill is an unwise one as they are true drugs of addiction, fulfilling both the needed criteria for this, tolerance and withdrawal.

  4. Herbal sleepaid tablets Kalms

  5. You don't need a prescription for Melatonin.  You find it at any drugstore.

  6. you definitely need a prescription with sleeping pills... it is because there are many instances that people are abusing that kind of drug.octors wouldnt give you a prescription for sleeping pills if you dont really need it.. maybe you are just stressed out.. so try to relaxed yourself instead...

  8. If the pill is a controlled substance, that is, if it contains a narcotic, then yes, a prescription is needed.  However, there are across the counter sleeping aids that you can buy.  I have good results with Tylenol "Simply Sleep."  They help me sleep and don't contain a strong narcotic.  Try them, and good luck.
