Question:

Do you need a reason to ask for a copy of your medical records?

I am going to Planned Parenthood to ask for a copy of my entire record there. They were rude to me and I would like to see what they wrote in my chart. I went there to get birth control pills for Endometriosis and I think they keep writing down I am sexually active. I am NOT sexually active and I don't want that in my file.

Also, I am going to ask for it in writing and drop off the letter. What should I say in the letter?

Will they ask for a reason or is it my right to NOT have a record and just ask for them?

  1. No, you don't have to have a reason. They are your records but you may have to pay for them. Whoever you want a copy from has 30 days to fulfill your request and can charge you a reasonable fee. Hope this helps.

  2. you do not need a reason; however, they sometimes charge a "paperwork" fee

  3. You are allowed to copies of your medical records pursuant to the HIPPA law. You do not need to explain why you want your records. However, the law does allow fees to be charged for copying the medical records.

    Good luck

  4. No - never give a reason for something like this.  Those medical records are yours - and it's your right to see them.
