I'm getting married next month and we're going to apply for our marriage license next week. I can't find my social security card and I haven't told my fiance yet. I'm starting to freak out a little bit. If you do have to have the actual card does anyone know how long it takes for them to send a replacement.

I have my passport and BC If thats any help

  1. In North Carolina, while you do not need your social security card itself,  you do need an official document that shows your social security number.

This can include, but is not limited to:  W-2 form, payroll stub, or a statement from the Social Security Office stating the SSN.

    (SocialSecurity.Gov)

If you do apply for a new Social Security Card, it does take at least a few weeks to get to you.  The website (http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.... even says it cannot disclose online how long it will take, because of security precautions they have to take and yadda yadda.

  2. You can bring a copy of your last year's tax return and a paystub with the SSN on it.  You don't have to have the card itself, you just have to prove that you have a SSN.  You could go online to Social Security to check out the FAQs--losing a card has to be one of them and they should give you an estimate of how long a replacement takes.

Or just go to your local SS office, fill out the form, bring proof of ID and a paystub or something, and pay the replacement fee.  If you wait to request the replacement until after you're married you can decide if you want it issued under your married name.

Congratulations--I hope every day is happier than the last :-)
